Presenter: Dr. Lee Gunderson Location: Ponderosa F, room 103 The objectives of this three-year study were to: (1) describe very young immigrant students' long-term achievement in school; (2) compare the achievement of very young immigrant students who entered Canada with English skills to the achievement of those who entered with no English skills; (3) explore the Common Underlying Proficiency (CUP) Model; (4) explore the predictive power of background and language variables in secondary school achievement; (5) measure disappearance and dropout rates, and; (6) compare the results for very young immigrant students with those related to older school-age immigrant students. A battery of English language tests were administered to approximately 1,300 6 to 9 year-old immigrant students in the mid 1990s. Measures included such skills as letter recognition, number recognition, word recognition, naming colors, naming common school items, and naming body parts. In addition, family, immigration status, and linguistic background data were collected. Approximately 650 students remain in the school district in 2008. Preliminary data will be presented on their academic success in secondary schools.
